Cork grows on tree and is peeled harmlessly… And grows back again after seven years of new growth. The cork used in Birkenstock shoes is a by-product of the bottling industry. The remaining scraps are ground up to make the Original Contoured Footbed. Scrap leather, left-over EVA and paper boxes are further processed to be recycled. Only the lightest, premium-quality cork is used in Birkenstock footwear for maximum comfort.
